Eligibility: Open to high school seniors, high school graduates, and currently�enrolled community college students in Nebraska and western Iowa who are interested in attending college in the Ak-Sar-Ben region. For the purposes of this program, western Iowa is defined as the following counties: Adair, Adams, Audubon, Buena Vista, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Cherokee, Clay, Crawford, Dickinson, Fremont, Greene, Guthrie, Harrison, Ida, Lyon, Mills, Monona, Montgomery, O'Brien, Osceola, Page, Pottawattamie, Plymouth, Ringgold, Sac, Shelby, Sioux, Taylor, Union, and Woodbury. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. They must submit their application to the financial aid office at the community college they are attending or planning to attend; the college nominates 3 incoming freshmen and 3 currently-enrolled students from this group. As part of the application process, students must include a completed application form, a 250�word personal essay, 2 letters of reference, a transcript, and their federal student aid report Selection is based on leadership potential, academic achievement, desire to earn a degree, and financial need. Financial data: The stipend is $1,000, paid in 2 equal installments. To receive the second installment, recipients must have maintained full-time enrollment and a GPA of 2.5 or higher the previous semester. Funds must be used for tuition, fees, and books. Duration: 1 year. Additional information: Since the sponsor's scholarship program was established in 1945, more than 13,000 scholarships have been awarded. Recipients must attend school on a full-time basis. . Number awarded: Up to 12 each year. Deadline: March of each year. |
